I have carried out building works without planning permission. What is the time limit for the council to take action against me?

The general rule is four years. This covers building works (eg putting up an unauthorised extentsion or roof-conversion), or changing a non-residential building into a house. In all other instances (eg changing a house into an office) there is a ten-year period.
